Your Tongue and the Roof of Your Mouth Need Brushing Too!

Posted on 5/15/2025 by Esthetic Smiles
A diverse family brushing their teeth together in the mirror. We all know the importance of brushing our teeth, but did you know that brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth is just as important? It's true! These areas harbor bacteria that can contribute to bad breath, cavities, and other oral health problems.

Why Brush Your Tongue and Roof of Your Mouth?

The tongue and the roof of your mouth (also known as the palate) are covered in a thin layer of mucus. This mucus traps food particles, bacteria, and dead cells, which can lead to plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky film that can irritate the gums and cause inflammation. If left untreated, plaque can harden into tartar, which is much more difficult to remove.

Brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth helps to remove plaque and bacteria before they have a chance to cause problems. It also helps to stimulate saliva production, which helps to neutralize acids in the mouth and wash away food particles.

How to Brush Your Tongue and Roof of Your Mouth

Brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth is easy! Simply follow these steps:
1~ Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. A hard-bristled toothbrush can irritate your tongue and the roof of your mouth.
2~ Apply a small amount of toothpaste to your toothbrush. You can use the same toothpaste that you use to brush your teeth.
3~ Gently brush your tongue from back to front. Use a back-and-forth motion, and be sure to reach all areas of your tongue.
4~ Brush the roof of your mouth using a circular motion. Be sure to reach the back of your palate.
5~ Rinse your mouth with water.

Other Tips for Keeping Your Mouth Healthy

In addition to brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth, there are other things you can do to keep your mouth healthy:
•  Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.
•  Floss once a day. Flossing helps to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
•  Use an antiseptic mouthwash. Mouthwash can help to kill bacteria and freshen your breath.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can check for any problems and provide you with professional cleaning.

Prevention is Key

Prevention dentistry is the best way to keep your mouth healthy. By following the tips above, you can help to prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems. And remember, brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth is just as important as brushing your teeth!
