What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Dr. John Abajian
What Causes Tooth Discoloration?Discolored teeth can affect your smile. They can also lead to oral issues such as gingivitis and cavities. In most cases, tooth discoloration results from smoking and coffee consumption. However, it can occur due to various reasons, such as:

Poor Dental Hygiene

Failing to brush and floss regularly can contribute to tooth discoloration. When you skip brushing, bacteria and food particles will build up around the teeth, leading to tartar and tooth discoloration. This mostly occurs when one skips professional dental exams and cleaning. In this case, brushing at least twice a day and flossing once can help to maintain a white smile. Besides, it is vital to prioritize dental checkups.

Certain Food and Beverages

Some foods and beverages may be delicious, but they can do a lot of harm to your teeth. Items such as coffee, tea, soda, candies, cakes, and some fruits have a staining effect. As a general rule of thumb, anything that can stain your clothes can also stain your teeth. In this case, it is best to switch from things like coffee or anything with a high acidity level. When you consume them, it would be best to rinse your mouth with water to remove the staining agents.

Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions can affect the tooth enamel. They deteriorate the strength of the enamel, leading to a weakened tooth. This makes you prone to tooth discoloration as a side effect of some treatments. For instance, chemotherapy can result in teeth discoloration. Besides, certain drugs can affect the formation of enamel in children. This makes the kids prone to having yellowish teeth.

Genetics

Genetics can also affect the appearance of your teeth. Some people are born with yellowish enamel. However, this doesn't mean that the teeth cannot be whitened. Our professional will examine your teeth to determine the root cause of discoloration. With this, they will come up with teeth whitening treatment options based on your needs.
